The Premise
According to the ASCE Journal of Infrastructure Systems - which, in 2004, featured an article downloadable at "High-Performance Buildings for High-Tech Industries" the amount of electricity consumption for Internet data flows in the United States in 2002 was 1.5 billion kW/h (kilowatt hours). That figure represents just the data flows, alone - excluding servers, hubs, and routers, etc. The final figure for electricity consumption covering overall Internet usage in the US in 2002 was 24 billion kW/h. The data flows in 2002 was estimated to be around 240,000 TB (terabytes). Using those figures, it can be deduced that for every single byte that is transmitted over the Internet, a .0000056th of a watt/hour of electrical power would be required. Using this idea as a starting point, we (a group of European webmasters) created GoogleNRG - a Google Search Engine that would carry out searches in the same way that a "normal" search engine would - but in a way that would yield the most effective data transfer to obtain the same search result - with the least possible consumption of electrical power. Using Google CSE, we built a website that does exactly what the "normal" Google does, but without the "frills" such as the results page, images, logos etc. In this way, each CPU involved in the search performs the same type of search, but with the least amount of "extraneous" data be compiled. In other words, the result you get is "just the facts" - without always having to generate the logo or other images. As of January, 2008 the GoogleNRG Search Engine became available as an energy-saving search option for computer users in over 30 countries. Saving Energy While Searching the Internet Every time a user opens the "normal" Google.com home page, there is a data transfer of 7740 bytes for the page and 8558 bytes for the logo - totaling 16,289 bytes. However, when a user opens the GoogleNRG home page there is a data transfer of 2138 bytes for the page and 111 bytes for the counter - totaling 2249 bytes. The GoogleNRG logo appears as "text" and not as an "image". A difference of 14,049 less bytes per page - which translates to a total of 0.078 W/h - is saved by each visitor. For every search result page there is a difference of 8000 bytes and an energy value of 0.0448 W/h is saved! A "counter" (an embedded scripting language program used at the the GoogleNRG server) calculates the watt hours saved by the homepage and displays the "savings" - yielded in a measurement which is standard for most countries (in most cases - 0.076 W/h). The counter displays just the W/h saved by the homepage - hence the figure of 0.076 W/h. In some countries, the measurement of electricity is different, but the reduction of overall energy consumption remains a constant fact. The Opportunity to Make a Difference We invite you to consider becoming a supporter (and user) of GoogleNRG by adjusting your browser's preferences to designate it as the home page which will open each time you launch your browser. We also invite you to visit this site, where you'll find a list of suggestions for reducing the energy usage of your personal computer. Everyone can save energy and money by making choices regarding power management on their computer monitors. With over 55 million office computers in the US, the EPA estimates that over 11 billion kWh could be saved through monitor power management. Think of it this way: The energy consumption of 15 computers can be equivalent to the gas consumption of one car! Copyright, Disclaimer & Privacy Policy The Google logo is a trademark of Google.com.
